Armor up! The Helmet of Salvation

Updated: Nov 4, 2024

But since we [believers] belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope and confident assurance of salvation. '

1 Thessalonians 5:8 (See also Ephesians 6)

If I had an enemy and I wanted that enemy to be assassinated without even the slightest chance of survival, I would aim my weapon at the most vulnerable part. The helmet in battle was used by the Roman soldiers in protecting the head against the enemy’s attacks because they understood that is the enemy's target. A head injury weakens the whole body. It is so with our adversary the devil today, most of His attacks come to conquer the mind. If he sends discouraging news, the goal is to bring the mind down so that all the other body parts drop dead. The battle is in the mind, If the enemy can influence you to question what God has spoken to you, then he already went for the kill because nothing else will make sense after that.

The Bible says we are not fighting against flesh and blood enemies, the battles that we see physically are a physical manifestation of what is happening in the spiritual realm, we are fighting against rulers and authorities, against the powers of this dark world, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

The good news is that we are already victorious through Christ, greater is He who is within us than he that is in the world, the battle is already won, but how do you take possession of that victory? Ephesians 6 says to stand your ground, having put on all of God's armor.

Today the armor I want to highlight is the helmet of salvation because the battle always starts in the mind.

The helmet of salvation means the awareness and the knowledge of God's salvation. Now that you are in Christ the old has passed away, sin has been conquered by Jesus on the cross together with its consequences, In Christ, all things work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose. I don't care what the enemy has told you, God can turn any situation around for good. There is no condemnation nor spiritual death to those who are in Christ, you are alive with Him. The helmet of salvation is the knowledge of who you are. David did not win the battle over the Philistines by using physical weapons, but the most powerful weapon that gave him victory over Goliath was the invisible helmet of God's salvation, In the chapter, God is described as Jehovah Sabaoth, the Lord of Heaven’s armies, the bible says Goliath came bearing a sword, a spear, and a javelin, but David came in the name of the Lord, he came with confidence knowing he comes in the name of the God who fights for those He loves. When we know who God is, we become a threat to the kingdom of darkness, ignorance is not bliss, my people are destroyed for lack of knowledge (of My law where I reveal my will) Hosea 4:6 AMP when you have knowledge of God, that is preparation against the troubles of the world, ignorance of God's word is like going to battle without any covering, it is falling vulnerable to the enemy's attacks, therefore the armor of salvation is covering the mind with the knowledge and hope in God's salvation.

The battles that we go through often seem impossible to conquer, like we will never get out of the pit, but it takes only just one word from God to break free, wait expectantly for God's salvation, and don’t give the enemy any opportunity by sitting around constantly thinking about the problem, rather shift your eyes to the problem solver, magnifying God by singing songs of deliverance and meditation of scripture. Victory is certain in us who are in Christ, it's just that sometimes we fail to have the awareness of the power that is at our disposal. We must not wait until trouble comes to armor up, because the enemy will be attacking whilst you are still trying to find your sword, your shield, and your shoes and before you know it you are hit but we can stay ready every day even when all is good by dressing ourselves with Gods armor so that when the day of trouble comes we can simply pull out our divine weapons.

Lets prayer

Father, I pray that you would bring me into awareness of the weapons that you have given me. I pray that you would establish my footing in my identity in Christ, that I would have confidence in your salvation, help me to stay ready so I don't have to get ready, and that I may not be ignorant of the enemy's schemes. I ask in Jesus' name Amen.
